Seminar on the role of higher education in promotion of a culture of democracy and human rights

A seminar on the role of higher education in promotion of a culture of democracy and human rights was held on 13-14 November 2014 in Pavlodar. The seminar was organized within the framework of the European Union and Council of Europe Joint Programme “Supporting Education Policies in Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights Education in Kazakhstan”, which was officially launched on 20-21 September 2013 in Astana.

This seminar was part of the current activities of the Council of Europe in the field of higher education, which examine the role of higher education institutions as active promoters of democratic citizenship and human rights education. It brought together over 70 rectors, pro-rectors, professors, directors of schools and teachers from all over the country and was targeted on how the higher education institutions can contribute for the development of sustainable democratic culture. The seminar was also focused on the development of the teaching methods for promoting human rights and democratic citizenship at schools and higher education institutions.

Council of Europe experts, officials from the Ministry of Education and Science and representatives from Pavlodar State University and other educational institutions of Kazakhstan had an opportunity to share their experience and perspectives.

In spring 2014 we will start piloting the tools on Education for Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights Education in two schools selected by the Ministry.
