Culture, Heritage and Diversity

Cultural Heritage

Council of Europe action in the field of cultural and natural heritage targets:

    promoting diversity and dialogue through access to heritage to foster a sense of identity, collective memory and mutual understanding within and between communities;
    contributing to development that is linked to territorial cohesion, life style and relationships through the notion of heritage and landscape as community resources.

This work involves the follow-up of Council of Europe conventions on heritage and landscape, including the targeting of decision-makers, professionals and civil society. Different forms of co-operation include the systematic exchange of information, reviews of policies, the development of prospective thinking in the sector of cultural and natural heritage, and technical assistance programmes and field work. The work is carried out under the guidance of the Steering Committee.
The programme encompasses initiatives which enhance the visibility and importance of heritage and landscape, such as for example the European Heritage Days.
