Health Policy

Sixth Conference of European Health Ministers held in Athens on 22-23 April 1999 discussed “Ageing in the 21st Century: The need for a balanced approach towards healthy ageing”

The theme was chosen as a continuation of the work of the health committee on the protection of vulnerable groups. Its aim was to allow a debate at the highest political level on the challenges to health care policies with which the member states are confronted with regard to the ageing of the European population. The policy declaration adopted at the end of the debate stressed the importance of ensuring equal access to care and cure, irrespective of age and called for the elimination of discriminatory age-related criteria.
