KNOW MORE ABOUT BIOETHICS – SAFEGUARDING HUMAN RIGHTS IN BIOMEDICINE

What are the challenges for human beings posed by developments in biomedicine and how do they affect our human rights?

On the occasion of the upcoming UN-led Global Ethics and Bioethics Week on 14-18 October 2019, the Council of Europe, alongside other members and associate members of the UN Inter Agency Committee on Bioethics (UNIACB), are raised awareness on the importance of bioethics in promoting the wellbeing of and respect for human beings with a series of short filmed interviews with key representatives and experts.

The filmed interviews were published on a daily basis and are available to watch on the Council of Europe’s webpages and via social media.

The Global Ethics and Bioethics Week is a joint awareness raising platform where UNIACB partners organize activities to promote bioethics and the ethics of science and technology. By collectively engaging the wider public, we can underline the important role of bioethics and ethical reflections in medicine, research and technological applications to promote wellbeing and respect for human rights.

UNIACB was set up in March 2003 following a proposal from the Director General of UNESCO, with the support of Mr Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the Organisation of the United Nations. Its members are the United Nations and its specialised agencies, which carry out specific activities in the field of bioethics (in particular UNESCO, FAO, WHO and WIPO). From the very beginning, the Council of Europe has been granted associate member status. The European Commission, OECD, WTO, ALECSO and IARC have also been granted this status. The main objectives of the UNIACB are to exchange information in the field of bioethics, to coordinate activities undertaken by the UN and its specialised agencies and to encourage active cooperation between its members and associated members in the field of bioethics.
