50th anniversary of the first WEU Assembly
On the occasion of the Parliamentary Assembly session, a ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the first WEU Assembly will take place on 23 June 2005 at 5.15 p.m. at the Assembly Lobby of the Palais de l'Europe.

 Terry Davis: Council of Europe and WEU, a long history of close relations
23.06.2005 - ''Your Assembly, on many occasions, made significant contributions to progress in European security and defence issues,'' declared the Secretary General during the ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the first Western European Union Assembly. Although both organisations ''have quite different roles in Europe’s political architecture'' since ''the Council of Europe Statute explicitly excludes defence issues from our mandate'', nevertheless, they share ''the same European values of human rights, democracy and the rule of law'' he added.
