Parliamentary hearing on the media and terrorism
Paris, 17 March 2005
PACE's Committee on Culture held a hearing on the media and terrorism in Paris on 17 March. Participants looked at the role played by media coverage in terrorist strategy, the potential for media self-regulation, existing legal measures and the political steps that could be taken to strengthen them.

Among journalists attending were Timur Aliyev, editor of Chechen Society, Francisco Gor, leader-writer for El País, Georges Malbrunot, journalist on Le Figaro, Robert Ménard, Secretary General, Reporters sans frontières, Vit Pohanka, journalist on Czech Radio, Muhammad Krishan, TV presenter and member of the editorial board of Al-Jazeera and Stephen Whittle, Controller of editorial policy at the BBC. ''I wish to send them a message expressing our support and our hope for their prompt release,'' said Jacques Legendre (France EPP/CD), Chair of the Committee on Culture, Science and Education of the Parliamentary Assembly on the 17 March. ''By abducting journalists, the kidnappers are first and foremost, and in a most contemptible way, depriving human beings of their freedom, but at the same time they are also seeking to suppress freedom of speech as a whole.'' Prevention of Terrorism : draft Convention submitted to comments
Following the 7th meeting of CODEXTER (7-11 February 2005), the draft convention for the prevention of terrorism is now public and interested organisations are invited to submit any comments they may have regarding this text to: The latest version of the draft Convention, adopted at the 8th meeting (28 February-4 March 2005), takes into consideration the opinions provided by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the Commissioner for Human Rights and civil society.
