IFEX, a globally renowned network of non-governmental organisations dedicated to defending freedom of expression, has joined the Council of Europe’s Platform to promote the protection of journalism and safety of journalists as a new partner organisation.
The agreement formalising IFEX’s participation in the platform was signed by the Executive Director of IFEX, Rachael Kay and the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, on behalf of their respective organisations.
IFEX is a global network committed to promoting and defending freedom of expression and information rights. It brings together over 100 organisations in more than 70 countries, connecting local, national and international actors working on a wide range of freedom of expression issues, from protecting civic space and access to information to advocating for the safety of journalists and combating impunity for crimes against media workers. By combining grassroots expertise with collective action, IFEX strengthens international awareness and advocacy to better protect freedom of expression worldwide.
Headquartered in Toronto, Canada, IFEX holds observer status with the Council of Europe’s Steering Committee on media and information society (CDMSI) and participatory status with the organisation.
The addition of IFEX broadens the expertise and global reach of the platform, strengthening its work to address serious threats to media freedom via IFEX’s extensive network and expertise in monitoring violations of freedom of expression and supporting journalists at risk.
Launched in 2015, the platform today brings together 16 partner organisations among the leading international press freedom and journalists’ organisations, with the aim of strengthening the protection of journalists, preventing attacks and combating impunity.
