EDQM On Air – From history to health – the origins of the European Pharmacopoeia and the EDQM

EDQM On Air, the podcast on public health brought to you by the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines & HealthCare (EDQM) of the Council of Europe, has released a new episode: From history to health – the origins of the European Pharmacopoeia and the EDQMits first ever vodcast.

The journey that ultimately led to the creation of the European Pharmacopoeia began thousands of years ago. This episode traces the key milestones that transformed centuries of shared medical knowledge into shared priorities and a common vision, culminating in the creation of a single, authoritative reference work designed to ensure public health protection across Europe and beyond.

You are taken on a journey from early records of medicinal knowledge in ancient China (2800 BCE), through Sumerian tablets in Mesopotamia, to Egypt’s Ebers Papyrus – revealing early efforts to systematise formulas and treatments. The episode also traces the shift from oral traditions to the written word.

As politics evolved and borders shifted, the need to exchange medicines in times of crisis transformed the vision of “common standards” into concrete collective action, laying the foundations for what we know today as the European Pharmacopoeia.

Several episodes of EDQM On Air are already available, with more to come. Tune in for expert insight, engaging discussions and inspiring stories, and discover how the EDQM, together with its stakeholders, works every day to safeguard public health in ways you may not expect.
