Good governance in metropolitan areas in Ukraine, the case of Kyiv

The Programme “Decentralisation and Local Government Reform in Ukraine” supports the administrative territorial reform in Ukraine.

A workshop promoting good governance in metropolitan areas took place on 4 April in Kyiv and focused on the Kyiv Capital City. It was organised in co-operation with the Parliamentary Committee on Local Government, the Association of Ukrainian Cities and the Kyiv City Administration. It brought together mayors, heads of local administrations, public services’ specialists, lawyers and local government experts from the City of Kyiv and surrounding municipalities, experts of the Council of Europe and the U.S. Agency for International Development in Ukraine. The participants discussed the organisation of public services in agglomeration areas, in the fields of healthcare, transport, public utilities, urban planning, social services and education, as well as the case of Kyiv, current challenges and possible improvements. The consultations during the workshop and its conclusions will provide a valuable input to the international Peer Review on the governance in metropolitan areas in Ukraine, and the case of Kyiv, which will take place in May 2019, in co-operation with the European Committee on Democracy and Governance (CDDG).
