National NGOs’ campaigns within the project “Mobilise against sexism!” were conducted by the member organisations of the European Women's Lobby (EWL) in Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Ireland, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania and Spain in 2020-2021 to raise awareness and combat sexism in key sectors of society.

A first phase of the project was conducted in 2020 in nine countries. The second phase was implemented in seven countries (all except Belgium and Ireland).

The project aimed to promote the implementation of the Council of Europe Recommendation CM/Rec(2019)1 on preventing and combating sexism. It used the tools produced within the Council of Europe Campaign “Sexism: See it. Say it. Stop it!”, including an action page, a video and a quiz explaining what sexism is and what can be done to prevent and combat it.

In 2021, the EWL also published a statement with recommendations on sexism, which refers to the Recommendation CM/Rec(2019)1.

The project was implemented by the Lobby Europeo de Mujeres en España- LEM España in Spain.

about the national campaign

The LEM España chose, in parallel to the broader campaign messages, two specific sectors for further analysis during each phase of the campaign: the media and justice (2020, phase 1) and education and sport (2021, phase 2).

HIGHLIGHTS

 Justice sector

During the period of the project, LEM engaged with the CGPJ (General Council of the Judiciary) and the national prosecutor’s office. Discussions centred around sexism and the discriminatory experiences of women in the justice sector. This resulted to an agreement to organise a webinar on sexism, looking at the Council of Europe recommendation and ways on how to prevent sexism in their sector. One of the key findings from their discussion was that judges and prosecutors need to be trained about gender equality in order to address all forms of discrimination in the justice sector including how to break the glass ceiling and enable the space for women to achieve senior positions in their judicial career. This was a first step for LEM to continue having more training in 2021 and have a stronger partnership with the CGPJ.

 Public sector – government agency

LEM also contacted the Equality Minister (Instituto de la Mujer) the highest body for equality policies to increase partnership with LEM for the Council of Europe Recommendation and disseminate the Council of Europe campaign materials (the Equality Minister’s office translated the Council of Europe recommendation). It was agreed between the two parties that the Equality Minister will participate in the activities and webinars organised by LEM and will help in the visibility of the activities through their own communication tools and social media. This resulted to around 500 registrations for the two webinars organised by LEM, with at least 300 participants during the actual webinar.

 Media

LEM also increased their engagements with the media, specifically, for press (EL PAIS newspaper and ElDiario.es digital newspaper), television (TVE, Public Spanish Television), social networks and Universities training students to be journalists. LEM had meetings with all of the media outfits and presented the EWL MAS project with the Council of Europe, explained the Council of Europe recommendation and shared the campaign tools. It was agreed that a webinar will be organised to discuss sexism and discrimination happening in media. There were around 300 participants in the webinar and the discussions were very good which generated more interest and confirmation from the media outfit that they want to work further with LEM and organise more joint activities on sexism in 2021, including capacity building and training on how to combat sexism.

 Sport

LEM Spain reached all sport federations in the country (most of them count with an equality division), all football foundations (184) and to 20 associations of women in sports. In Spain, over 30 representatives from education sector (universities, schools) are also part of the informal coalition against sexism).
