Law Students Explore Human Rights Through the Lens of Constitutional Court Rulings

A university lecture on the presumption of innocence in criminal procedure law was held at Hacettepe University Faculty of Law. The event which is a part of a nationwide series of 30 lectures being delivered at law faculties across Türkiye brought together 122 students eager to deepen their understanding of fundamental rights protections under both the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and the Turkish Constitution.

The programme opened with welcoming remarks delivered by the Dean of Hacettepe University Faculty of Law, setting the tone for a rich and thought-provoking academic exchange. The session was moderated by a Chief Rapporteur of the Constitutional Court and featured a seminar led by a judge serving as both a Member of the Council of Judges and Prosecutors and a Member of the Court of Cassation. The lecturers offered students an in-depth look at how the Turkish Constitutional Court approaches the interpretation of the Turkish Constitution and the European Convention on Human Rights and how its rulings shape the respect, protection and advancement of fundamental rights in everyday life in Türkiye.

Students expressed strong interest in the Court’s role in safeguarding human rights and welcomed the opportunity to discuss ongoing legal and human-rights related challenges with legal practitioners. The lively discussion that followed allowed students to bridge the gap between legal theory and practice. The lecture made a meaningful contribution to promoting constitutional awareness and disseminating the Turkish Constitutional Court’s jurisprudence on fundamental rights.

The Joint Project on “Supporting the Effective Implementation of Turkish Constitutional Court Judgments in the Field of Fundamental Rights” is co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe. The Turkish Constitutional Court is the end beneficiary of the Project.
