On 30 and 31 January, the Department for the Execution of Judgments carried out a mission to Bucharest, organised in cooperation with the Permanent Representation of Romania to the Council of Europe and with the Agent of the Government of Romania before the European Court.
The Department’s delegation met the Secretary General of the Romanian Government to exchange on the process of reparation for properties nationalised during the communist period and on institutional measures underway at the level of the Government General Secretariat to guarantee the prompt and voluntary implementation of domestic court decisions by the State or State-controlled entities. Romania’s positive record in terms of closure of cases in 2023 was also highlighted during this meeting.
Detailed exchanges followed with representatives of the authorities involved in the process of reparation, including the President of the National Authority for Property Restitution, the Mayor of Bucharest, and the Secretary of State at the Ministry for Internal Affairs. The discussions focused on the ways to speed up and finalise this process, in the light of the indications given by the European Court in the judgment Văleanu and Others.
