High-level meeting with the Polish authorities to discuss cases concerning the rule of law

On 26 and 27 February, the Department for the Execution of Judgments accompanied the Director General of Human Rights and Rule of Law, Mr Christos Giakoumopoulos, and the Secretary to the Venice Commission, Ms Simona Granata-Menghini, in the high level-meetings in Warsaw with the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to discuss the execution of cases concerning the rule of law in Poland.

During the meetings the authorities presented information about their action plan to reinstate the rule of law in Poland, including the measures aiming at the execution of the European Court’s judgments concerning the composition of the Constitutional Court (Xero Flor), the appointment of judges of the Supreme Court on the recommendation of the National Council for the Judiciary lacking independence from the legislature and the executive (Reczkowicz), the premature termination of the term of office of presidents of domestic courts without judicial review (Broda and Bojara), the premature termination of the term of office of judicial members of the former NCJ without judicial review (Grzęda), the negative measures applied against judges defending the rule of law and judicial independence (Żurek, Juszczyszyn, Tuleya), and the pilot-judgment in the case of Wałęsa.
