Council of Europe Side Event on “Human Rights, Health and the Environment: Where human rights shape sustainable health and environmental action”

On 10 April 2026, the Council of Europe hosted an online side event on “Human Rights, Health and the Environment” as part of the One Health Summit.

The event brought together representatives and experts from the Council of Europe, its intergovernmental bodies, the United Nations Environment Programme, and the youth sector.

Discussions highlighted the multisectoral nature of health and environmental governance, emphasising the need for integrated and coherent approaches, as well as the significance of international collaboration in achieving shared goals. Speakers underlined the Council of Europe’s continued commitment to human rights-based environmental and health protection, reinforced through its legal instruments, and its contribution to advancing the One Health Approach by supporting prevention, tackling pollution, enhancing accountability, and protecting those most vulnerable. The event also stressed the critical value of public participation, particularly youth engagement and intergenerational equity, in addressing complex health and environmental challenges.

The event was open to the public. A recording of the livestream is available here: Human Rights, Health and the Environment
