Voltar UK strengthens evidence, guidance and support mechanisms for journalists’ safety

In 2025, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) commissioned new research examining the prevalence and forms of abuse experienced by journalists in the United Kingdom. The study covers physical, online and legal abuse, including abuse linked to gender, sexuality and race, and is expected to inform the next iteration of the National Action Plan for the Safety of Journalists.

At the same time, work continued to strengthen practical support for journalists facing online harassment and abusive legal threats.

In March 2025, updated Online Harassment Guidance for Journalists was launched by the Media Lawyers Association with support from DCMS. Through the National Committee’s Legal Threats Sub-Group, government institutions, legal professionals, media organisations and civil society representatives also continued developing responses to SLAPPs, including guidance for journalists facing abusive legal threats.

The research findings and guidance materials are expected to contribute to future policy development and strengthen protections for journalists, including women journalists and other groups disproportionately affected by harassment and abuse.
