Voltar Austrian police and journalists interaction during public events

In Austria, the police have established clear protocols to facilitate journalists’ work during public events and police operations, while ensuring safety and maintaining order. Central to this approach is the role of the Media Contact Officer, who serves as the first point of contact for journalists in cases involving restrictions on press freedom. Their responsibilities include reporting administrative or criminal offences, keeping the operation commander informed about media-related developments, and assisting journalists in carrying out their work. However, they are neither bodyguards nor press spokespersons.
Journalists are generally allowed to move freely within the area of police operations. The dismissal of journalists is rare and only occurs if their presence poses a danger to themselves or others, or if they obstruct police actions. Journalists are permitted to remain within protestor groups or leave at their discretion, as long as they do not actively participate in protests or activism. Even during restrictive police actions, such as encirclements, efforts are made to ensure that journalists can continue their work without undue hindrance.

To further support journalists, Austria has trained specialist officers to assist media personnel during police operations. These officers, wearing plain clothes with a police jacket, operate under the authority of the field commander. They are present on-site during significant events, act as liaisons between journalists and police commanders, and can provide direct assistance when requested.

For high-profile events involving police participation, a "Go-Team" is deployed. This team consists of at least one police spokesperson and a member of the social media team. The police spokesperson handles media interviews, provides information on the ground, and organises journalists outside potential "hot zones". Meanwhile, the social media team member ensures continuous online communication and supports the spokesperson.

Introduced in 2021, this system underscores Austria’s commitment to press freedom while balancing the safety and operational needs of police forces during public events.
