The Commissioner urges Serbia to shield the national Ombudsman from undue pressure

Today the Commissioner published a letter addressed to the Prime Minister of Serbia, Mr Aleksandar VUČIĆ, in which he urges the government to fully respect the Serbian Ombudsman’s independence and guarantee a favourable environment for his work.

“I am seriously concerned at reports indicating that there have been concerted efforts by certain politicians and some media in the country aimed at casting shadows over Ombudsman Janković’s independence and moral stature” writes the Commissioner in his letter.

Welcoming the reply of the Prime Minister and his intention to strengthen cooperation with the Ombudsman, the Commissioner underscored that he will continue to monitor developments closely and spare no effort to support the Ombudsman’s independence and effectiveness.
