Pforta Monastery is a former Cistercian complex founded in 1132. After the Reformation, the monastic life came to an end at the site, and in 1543 Duke Moritz of Saxony opened a State school in the former monastery, which is still operation (Landesschule Pforta) (www.cister.net/abbayes/fr/151/schulpforta-/-pforte). Part of the former monastery complex is open to visitors, and thanks to the Schulpforta Foundation a visitor center was opened in 2014.
