Indietro Regulation is crucial for responsible AI

Statement
Regulation is crucial for responsible AI

“Rapidly evolving technologies like AI are having a profound impact on human rights and dignity. We need regulation that engages the private sector in developing practices compliant with human rights law”, said Commissioner O’Flaherty today at the European Forum Alpbach during the panel 'Democracy in the digital age: unmasking the power of deception'.

The Commissioner highlighted major concerns relating to AI, including discrimination, marginalisation, the impact on women, as well as on human dignity.

“Human rights remain the only universal roadmap for upholding human dignity. While they were designed to hold state accountable, they must now be used also to govern the immense power held by private tech companies. As such, regulation is crucial. Europe is demonstrating leadership by introducing new legislation, such as the Council of Europe Framework Convention on Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law, and the EU AI Act and Digital Services Act. Now human rights must be systematically honoured to guide innovation in a responsible direction".
