The European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages is the European convention for the protection and promotion of languages used by traditional minorities. Together with the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities it constitutes the Council of Europe's commitment to the protection of national minorities. The implementation of the Charter is monitored by a committee of independent experts. European Day of Languages (26 September)

On the occasion of the European Day of Languages (26 September), Vesna Crnić-Grotić, Chair of the Committee of Experts of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, delivered a pre-recorded message at an event organised by NPLD. She recalled that communication and education in regional or minority languages remain topical challenges, and welcomed positive developments in several States Parties with regard to the commitments made under the Charter and their implementation.
