6th Plenary Meeting of the Santiago de Compostela Committee

The Committee of the Parties to the Council of Europe Convention against Trafficking in Human Organs, known as the Santiago de Compostela Committee, held its 6th plenary meeting (2-3 June) in Strasbourg.

On this occasion, the States Parties met to discuss the latest developments in the fight against trafficking in human organs and to strengthen the implementation of the Convention and cooperation between States.

One of the highlights of the meeting was the thematic hearing entitled ‘From Online Offers to Organ Trafficking: The Need For Coordinated Action’. This exchange of views brought together several guest speakers to discuss the current dynamics of organ trafficking facilitated by online platforms and to highlight the urgency of a joint response. The discussions provided an in-depth analysis of the issues raised and possible courses of action.

The plenary meeting also provided an opportunity to exchange experiences with, among others, representatives of the Network of National Contact Points on Transplant Travel (NETTA). It also welcomed two organisations as observers to the Santiago de Compostela Committee: the Istanbul Declaration Guardian Group and the World Medical Association.
