Back Closer co-operation between Council of Europe and Albania

"Council of Europe plays a vital role for the democratic changes in Albania", underlined the Foreign Minister. "We will do our utmost to further strengthen the role of the Council of Europe in Europe", Haxhinasto said. "I very much welcome a well-prepared Albanian Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers, and our joint priorities", emphasised Jagland. "I appreciate the Albanian Government's support for the reforms of the Council of Europe, so that the Council of Europe can be stronger in assisting member states in fulfilling their human rights' commitments", stated Jagland.

 “The Council of Europe must, as always, act on a legal basis and have access to all of Europe regardless of political considerations”, emphasised Jagland.

In Tirana, Secretary General Jagland also met with Prime Minister Sali Berisha, President Bamir Topi, Minister of Interior Bujar Nishani, and Speaker of the Parliament Jozefina Coba Topalli.  The SG also participated in the PACE Bureau meeting and paid a visit to the Council of Europe office in Tirana.
