The right of journalists not to disclose their sources and the right to access, receive and impart information are key prerequisites for freedom of the press and freedom of expression.
The protection of journalistic sources allows journalists to properly carry their job and investigate stories, safeguarding those who provide information to them. Without protection, sources may be deterred from assisting the press in highlighting matters of public interest.
Access to information is the cornerstone of a democratic society, as it allows the public to participate to informed decision-making processes and hold institutions into account.
Take a look at our factsheets now translated in Albanian and Serbian and find out more on important Council of Europe instruments and recommendations on the protection of journalistic sources and on the right of access to information.
