The Hon. Justice John L. Murray of the Irish Supreme Court has been elected by the Council of Europe's Committee of Ministers to lead a panel of experts assessing potential judges at the European Court of Human Rights.
The Council of Europe's Parliamentary Assembly elects one ECHR judge for each of the organisation's 47 member states on the basis of a shortlist submitted by the government in question.
The role of the advisory panel is to assess the professional suitability of candidates proposed by member governments before those shortlists are formally submitted.
The Advisory Panel of Experts on Candidates for Election as Judge to the European Court of Human Rights was created in 2010. Following a positive evaluation of its impact, the Committee of Ministers decided to renew its mandate on 5 February 2014.
The other members of the panel are Polish Supreme Court judge Katarzyna Gonera, the former President of the Turkish Court of Cassation, Sami Selçuk, and former ECHR judges Renate Jaeger (Germany), Matti Pellonpää (Finland) and Nina Vajić (Croatia).
