Today, at the closing session of the World Forum for Democracy, the Council of Europe announced that the winner of its Democracy Innovation Award was the initiative The Insider.

The Insider is an investigative newspaper that seeks to provide its readers with information about the current political, economic and social situation in Russia, while also promoting democratic values and shedding light on issues related to human rights and civil society. In addition, the Insider implements the “Antifake” project, with the objective of systematically debunking fake news in Russian media, and to help its audience to distinguish relevant information from fake news and propaganda.

Three initiatives out of the 30 or so presented at the Forum were shortlisted for the final vote:

  • The Read Across The Aisle app (USA) – lab 7
  • The investigative newspaper The Insider (Russian Federation) – lab 9
  • School for Creative Activism (USA) – lab 10

The Forum brought together 2 000 participants and 200 speakers from 80 countries who discussed practical initiatives to address the challenge of populism, looking particularly at the role of political parties and the media.

The 2018 World Forum for Democracy will be devoted to citizenship on the move.
