Back European Day of Languages 2020 – 26 September

Every year since 2001 the European Day of Languages celebrates the rich tapestry of languages coexisting in Europe and beyond. The European Centre for Modern Languages of the Council of Europe (ECML), encouraging excellence and innovation in language teaching, will take part in a key event in Graz (Austria) on 24 September.

A wide range of initiatives are planned across the continent, among them: an exhibition on preventing COVID-19 in all European languages! Gondifelos, (Portugal); a speak-dating event, Nové Město, (Czech Republic); “Les mots et les images” language day organised by the French embassy, Tashkent (Uzbekistan); A “What do you dare to do in a foreign language?” competition in Malta; a “Secret agent’s handbook of language challenges” activity in Rome and an online conference organised by the European Commission entitled “Education begins with language”.

22 September, videoconference (10 a.m.-11 a.m. CEST) – On the occasion of the European Day of Languages, Vesna Crnić-Grotić, Chair of the Committee of Experts of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, will participate in an exchange of views organised by the European Parliament’s Committee on Culture and Education.
