ECRI annual report: Racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, anti-semitism and intolerance are on the rise in Europe

Online hate speech that would have been unacceptable in the past is now an everyday occurrence and democratic debate is being undermined by polarised opinions.

Hatred against Muslims and Jews is gaining ground, members of Europe’s Black communities still face long-standing prejudice and discrimination, and strategies for Roma have often failed in the face of poverty and marginalisation – and it is even worse for women.

Not only did ultra-nationalist and xenophobic parties win seats in European elections in several countries but mainstream parties adopted restrictive policies.

Whilst some countries have made great advances in LGBTI rights, others have gone to the other extreme, excluding marriage between same sex couples. There, harassment, threats and violence are on the rise and perpetrators often go unpunished.

Racism and intolerance foster hate and violence and are a risk to us all. That is why the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) monitors every country in Europe to create solutions that work long-term.

For 25 years we have helped countries identify problems, bring in new laws, set up robust equality bodies and build support for victims; providing a road map for European societies to move towards equality and diversity.

In challenging times, our work is more important than ever. Show your support – take a stand against racism and intolerance.
