As part of the Council of Europe’s ongoing efforts to uphold the rights of migrants and refugees, recent joint actions and national-level initiatives in Türkiye, Moldova, and Armenia have delivered meaningful results in education, protection, and resilience-building.
In Türkiye, under the European Union and Council of Europe joint action “Strengthening the human rights protection in the context of migration,” refugee and migrant children and their mothers celebrated 23 April National Sovereignty and Children’s Day through interactive activities that raised awareness of fundamental rights. The initiative empowered 19 children and their mothers by increasing knowledge of their rights and capacity to advocate for well-being. Additionally, on 28 April, an international conference on “Protecting the Human Rights of Women and Girls in Migration: Standards and Promising Practices” was held in Ankara. Organised in collaboration with the Council of Europe project in Moldova, the event focused on the specific vulnerabilities of women and girls in migration and fostered discussions on coordinated solutions.
In Moldova, on 10 April, a National scientific conference on “Current challenges in border security and international protection” convened over 70 representatives from academia, state institutions, civil society, and international organisations. Held within the Council of Europe Project “Strengthening the protection of human rights of refugees and migrants in the Republic of Moldova: Phase II,” the conference served as a platform for constructive dialogue on effective border management and safeguarding human rights.
Further contributing to child-focused support in Moldova, a series of capacity-building activities took place between 14–18 April for over 40 professionals in education, social care, and migrant integration. Through a three-day training of trainers and a two-day seminar, participants were equipped to use the Resilience Journal for Adolescents to help young people develop emotional awareness, resilience, and self-confidence. The sessions also addressed the well-being of the professionals themselves, offering tools to manage stress and prevent burnout.
