On 20 May, the Division of Migration and Refugees (DMR) of the Council of Europe attended the online event focusing on the issue of statelessness, entitled: “Regional Action, Global Impact: Leveraging Regional Approaches and the Role of Inter-governmental Organisations in Addressing Statelessness”. Through its participation, the Council of Europe reaffirmed its continued interest in regional dialogue and multilateral collaboration to strengthen rights-based approaches to migration and statelessness.
The European Committee on Legal Co-operation (CDCJ) and the Global Alliance to End Statelessness co-organised the event, which brought together 57 participants, representing 9 regional IGOs. The CDCJ presented the work of the Council of Europe on statelessness and of the Limited Working group of the CDCJ on migration (CDCJ-MIG), i.e. the revision of the Recommendation CM/Rec(2009)13 on the nationality of children and the elaboration of a compendium of good practice on access to nationality for stateless children. Its Chair, Mr Francesco Crisafulli, moderated the first session of the Lab.
The event featured presentations from a range of regional actors, including the African Union, Organization of American States (OAS), CLARCIEV, OSCE, and the League of Arab States (LAS), showcasing key policy developments and good practices in the fight against statelessness.
Statelessness remains a priority area within the Council of Europe’s ongoing Action Plan on Protecting Vulnerable Persons in the Context of Migration and Asylum (2021–2025). It will also feature prominently in the forthcoming Action Plan for the period 2026–2029, reinforcing the Organisation’s long-standing commitment to advancing the right to nationality and preventing statelessness across its member states.
