How can we ensure that the growing use of artificial intelligence in public administrations goes hand-in-hand with advancing equality and non-discrimination?

Over the past two years, the equality bodies of Belgium (Unia), Finland (Non-Discrimination Ombudsman) and Portugal (Commission for Citizenship and Gender Equality) worked in close partnership with the Council of Europe and the European Commission to turn European standards on AI, equality and non-discrimination into practical approaches that equality bodies and public authorities can use in their work.

On 17 September in Brussels, representatives of equality bodies, public administrations, European institutions and experts will come together for the closing event of this joint project.

Discussions will explore lessons from the three participating countries, the evolving role of equality bodies in the European AI regulatory landscape, and opportunities for stronger cooperation between public authorities as AI becomes increasingly integrated into public and private services. The event will also mark the launch of the new European assessment methodology on algorithmic discrimination and showcase the project's policy guidance, national analyses and capacity-building tools.

The project closing event will welcome contributions by high-level representatives from the European Commission, Council of Europe, Belgium, Finland and Portugal, as well as experts and senior representatives of Unia, the Non-Discrimination Ombudsman of Finland and the Commission for Citizenship and Gender Equality of Portugal.
