The first Council of Europe Business and Human Rights Forum – BRAVE (Business-Rights- Action-Values-Ethics) brought together businesses, business associations, representatives of authorities and Council of Europe experts to discuss human rights, democracy, and the rule of law as basis for economic and social progress.
The Forum highlighted the Council of Europe’s key standards and initiatives relevant to business, including the European Convention on Human Rights, the European Social Charter, and activities related to the environment and artificial intelligence.
Opening the event, Secretary General Alain Berset stressed that many of today’s business challenges can be addressed by strengthening democracy, which builds the trust necessary for stability and sustainable economic growth. He emphasised that the New Democratic Pact for Europe offers new opportunities for cooperation between the Council of Europe and the business sector.
Speakers included Srbuhi Galyan, Minister of Justice of Armenia, who underscored the alignment between human rights protection and successful business, and Lyra Jakulevičienė, member of the UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights, who highlighted that economic development and human rights are mutually reinforcing.
The report “Human Rights and Competitiveness – Reframing the Business Case for Human Rights” was presented and successful examples of human rights–compliant business practices were showcased.
The Forum was organised within the framework of the Human Rights and Environmentally Responsible Business Practices project.
