In January and April 2025 the joint European Union and Council of Europe action Strengthening human rights protection in Serbia and the Judicial Academy of the Republic of Serbia (JA) continued with organisation of practical trainings on various Articles of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).
The sessions aimed to provide participants with hands-on skills and tools to effectively apply the ECHR in their professional roles. The Supreme Court advisor who had spent six months at the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) with the action’s support delivered insights into the relevant case-law of the ECtHR and facilitated interactive case studies that enhanced participants’ understanding of practical application of ECHR standards.
Whereas in 2024 the training was organised for JA’s initial training beneficiaries (JA trainees) from Belgrade, in 2025 the training sessions were held in Ruma and Kragujevac for JA trainees from all other parts of Serbia.
The trainings are a part of the ongoing efforts of the action "Strengthening human rights protection in Serbia" to provide assistance to the state institutions in implementing European Convention on Human Rights and the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights at the domestic level through enhancing capacities of Serbian legal professionals. Previously, the HELP course “Introduction to the European Convention on Human Rights and the European Court of Human Rights” was adapted for Serbian legal professionals by the action and introduced as a compulsory part of the JA trainees’ curriculum. Through these complementary activities supported by the action, the entire 12th generation of the JA trainees had the chance to gain both theoretical and practical knowledge on the European Convention on Human Rights and the European Court of Human Rights.
The action is a part of the joint European Union and Council of Europe programme “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Türkiye”, implemented by the Council of Europe.
