2004 - Oudenaarde

The Oudenaarde townOudenaarde is a Flemish-speaking town located in the province of East Flanders, south of Gent on the banks of the Escaut river.  For centuries, it has been a small industrial centre (weaving, brewing), which used to be famous for its tapestries, and it is known as the pearl of the Flemish Ardennes.

For many years now, it has maintained six very active twinnings, with Arras (France), Bergen op Zoom (Netherlands), Buzau (Romania), Castel Madama (Italy), Coburg (Germany) and Hastings (Great Britain).  Particularly in recent years, its administration, local associations and schools have actively co-operated with the Twinned Town Association established in Oudenaarde to give substance to the process of European integration.
