On the occasion of the International Day of the Girl Child, an inspiring event took place at Sami Frashëri High School in Tirana, bringing together youth, educators, and women leaders to celebrate the rights and potential of girls. Throughout the afternoon, participants engaged in dialogue on girls’ rights and issued a call to action to support girls’ education and leadership across Albania.
The activity, which gathered around 100 young girls and boys, was organised in collaboration with the Student Government and students from the German Programme within Sami Frashëri School. They actively contributed to discussions, highlighting their aspirations and the vital role they play as future leaders in their communities. The event aimed not only to celebrate girls’ achievements and ambitions but also to emphasise the importance of fostering equality and empowerment within the educational environment and beyond.
Giulia Re, Head of the Council of Europe Office in Tirana, stated during the discussion: “Today is a reminder that your rights are fundamental. Your education is your power. And your voice is essential for our shared democratic future.”
Erinda Ballanca, Albania’s Ombudsperson, added: “Empowering girls strengthens our democracy and promotes a democratic society. We must continue to support their voices.”
As special guests on this important day, they engaged with students in an inspiring conversation focused on crucial themes such as education, equity, and empowerment, underscoring the key message that girls’ rights are human rights.
This activity was organised within the framework of the Council of Europe project “Strengthening Democratic Citizenship Education in Albania”, funded by the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida). The project seeks to promote active participation, equality, and empowerment among young people throughout the country, enabling them to become engaged and responsible citizens.
The International Day of the Girl Child serves as a powerful reminder that empowering girls through education and equal opportunities is essential for building a more equitable future.
