On 8 June 2021, the members of the Council of Europe Working Group on Artificial Intelligence in Education (WG-AIEd) gathered, for the first time, to discuss the challenges of AI in Education and explore opportunities for international research, policy and legal developments in this area.

The Education Department is planning to:

  • conduct a survey assessing current policies and practices as well as the needs of Council of Europe member States on artificial intelligence in the field of education (AIEd);
  • conduct a desktop review of existing studies/research on the use of AIEd;
  • prepare a political statement on AIEd;
  • organize a series of webinars to launch a public debate with high level experts on the topic of AI in Education.

The working group was informed about the Council of Europe’s overall context and priorities related to education and artificial intelligence. The members of the working group were asked to consider the foreseen activities within that context and to advise on how the Council of Europe can best contribute through its new intergovernmental project on AIEd to the developments in this field.

The working group will meet again on 30 June 2021 to consolidate the project timeline and the division of work among its members.
