As we in the Council of Europe conclude the European Year of Digital Citizenship Education 2025, we would like to extend our gratitude to our diverse partners across the continent – governments, educators, civil society, youth, parents, and private sector organisations who joined hands with us to enhance digital citizenship education and empower a community of active, responsible, and ethical digital citizens.
The European Year offered a collaborative platform for sharing of best practices, and collective goal setting. Major events such as the Launch Conference, the European Digital Citizenship Education Forum, and the Final Closing event provided key moments for dialogue, learning, and validation of a visionary road map for the years ahead.
Numerous activities were organised throughout the European Year spanning the continent from Portugal to the South Caucasus, including awareness raising campaigns, teacher training sessions, research and development of digital resources. These were brought to life by the members of the DCE Promoters’ Network and other committed actors of the digital citizenship education.
At its heart, the European Year reconfirmed the urgent need to prioritise digital citizenship education across all levels of society. By fostering accessible opportunities to learn, connect, and engage, 2025 helped pave the way for more inclusive, safe, and democratic digital spaces for learners of all ages.
As we look towards 2026, the spirit of collaboration and innovation from the European Year 2025 informs the Council of Europe’s Road Map for Strengthening Digital Citizenship Education 2027-2031 – a shared commitment to empower all learners to thrive in the digital age.
Best wishes for a very happy New Year from the team of Digital Transformation Unit of the Education Department!
