The Committee of Experts on Artificial Intelligence and Education (EDU-IA) brought together member states representatives, participating organisations and experts to review progress and provide strategic guidance on the Council of Europe’s work on AI and education.

Discussions focused on ensuring that the development and use of AI in education remain firmly grounded in human rights, democracy and the rule of law, in line with the Learners First: Education Strategy 2024–2030.

The Committee was presented with the updated Council of Europe Compass for AI and Digital Transformation in Education, as well as a draft proposal for a legal instrument on the use of AI systems in education. The afternoon focused on the draft Guidelines on

Educational Data and Learning Analytics, followed by an exchange of national experiences and initiatives in AI and education.

Day 2 focused on the European Reference Framework for the Evaluation of Educational Technologies, the Policy Toolbox for AI and Education, and preparations for the 4th Working Conference on AI Governance in Education.

The meeting also provided an opportunity for the Committee to explore cooperation with other Council of Europe bodies, take stock of the outcomes of the meeting and agree on the next steps in advancing its programme of work.
