In a significant step toward combating peer violence and enhancing student well-being, 72 researchers in Serbia are now equipped with essential skills and tools to lead a major national research on peer violence and students’ wellbeing in schools.
This follows an intensive training, organized within the 'Prevent Bullying and Peer Violence in Schools' project, that was designed to prepare participants for the practical and ethical demands of school-based research. The Council of Europe is applying its own unique approach to this research, leveraging the expertise of researchers who are acknowledged as valuable resources by the Council of Europe, following years of sustained investment in their skills, expertise and professional development.
The training focused on the practical application of research tools and techniques, along with addressing common challenges in conducting school-based research, and covered topics such as ethical considerations, research timeline management, and data privacy. Participants also engaged in discussions on overcoming challenges in school-based research and shared experiences across diverse educational contexts.
Beginning in December, the researchers will gather data from over 3,200 students, parents, and staff across 78 elementary and high schools in Serbia. The study will provide evidence to inform policies aimed at reducing bullying, fostering supportive school environments, and improving overall student well-being.
Following the training, on 25 October, an informative session was held for a group of principals from all 78 schools included in the study, along with representatives of all School Boards in Serbia and the Ministry of Education. The session aimed to prepare key stakeholders for the upcoming national survey and to ensure a smooth, coordinated approach to data collection across the elementary and highschools.
This project is implemented by the Council of Europe and funded by Germany. It is been carried out in co-operation with the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Republic of Serbia from January 2024 to December 2025.
