Marking the 10th anniversary of the Istanbul Convention: event in Belgrade

The event marking the 10th anniversary of the Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (Istanbul Convention) will be held in Belgrade on 7 May 2021.

On 11 May, the Council of Europe celebrates 10 years of the Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, better known as the Istanbul Convention. The treaty today binds 34 countries across Europe. Serbia has joined the Convention in 2014. The importance, key achievements and challenges the Istanbul Convention is facing will be discussed in the event.

Opening remarks will be given by:

  • Tobias Flessenkemper, Head of the Council of Europe Office in Belgrade
  • Ambassador Sem Fabrizi, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Serbia
  • Biljana Branković, member of GREVIO (Group of Experts on Action against Violence against Women and Domestic Violence, a monitoring body of the Istanbul Convention)
  • Gordana Čomić, Minister of Human and Minority Rights and Social Dialogue of Serbia

Afterwards, two keynote speakers will address the participants:

  • H.E. Thomas Schieb, Ambassador of Germany, on behalf of the Presidency of the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers
  • H.E. Virginia Pina, Ambassador of Portugal, on behalf of Presidency of the Council of the European Union

Due to COVID-19 restrictions and limited space, media are invited to follow the event primarily through a video link, upon preliminary registration. Interested media representatives should register by sending an e-mail to [email protected] no later than 14:00 on 6 May. Simultaneous interpretation will be provided.

 

The event is organised by the Council of Europe Office in Belgrade in co-operation with the Ministry of Human and Minority Rights and Social Dialogue of Serbia, with the support of the joint European Union/Council of Europe action “Preventing and combating trafficking in human beings in Serbia” which is a part of the joint European Union/Council of Europe programme “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey 2019-2022”.
