The Council of Europe will organise a public event at the 9th World Congress Against the Death Penalty under the theme “The situation of the death penalty in Belarus: abolitionist advocacy from Belarusian civil society and youth, at the national and international levels”. The meeting will provide a platform for Belarusian civil society representatives and democratic forces representatives in exile to address the state of play of the situation of the death penalty in the country, and to exchange views on advancing the abolitionist agenda in Belarus and among the diaspora, as well as on strengthening youth engagement despite the challenging political environment.  The event is part of the activities under the Council of Europe Contact Group on Co-operation with Belarusian Democratic Forces and Civil Society.

The event will take place on Thursday, 2 July, from 11.30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Galerie des Fêtes, Hotel de Lassay (Assemblée nationale). It is open to media upon mandatory preliminary accreditation.
