Paul MAFFEI began his professional career as a lawyer in
1975, and subsequently discharged the following duties:
- substitute Crown Counsel (1979-1983);
- judge in Brussels Court of First Instance (1983-1991);
- judge in Brussels Court of Appeal (1991-1998).
In September 1998 he was appointed as judge to the Belgian
Court of Cassation. He was also appointed as substitute
judge to the Benelux Court of Justice in October 2011, which
duties he discharged simultaneously with those of judge with
the Court of Cassation.
Paul MAFFEI has dealt with a wide range of subjects,
including civil law, commercial and economic law, tax law
and criminal law. His main current post is as judge in the
Criminal Section of the Court of Cassation. He has also been
President of the Dutch Chamber of the Belgian National
Disciplinary Council since its inauguration in 2005.
Paul MAFFEI was a substitute member of the Consultative
Council of the Judiciary in Belgium from 2006 to 2010. He
has organised several judicial training programmes, also
taking part in them as a speaker. He has also contributed to
judicial training courses in various member States as a
Council of Europe expert. He has written articles for legal
publications.
Paul MAFFEI has been a member of the CCJE since 2007, and
has since taken part in the working groups responsible for
preparing CCJE Opinions. He has been a member of the CCJE
Bureau since 2009, and the plenary assembly elected him as
Vice-Chairperson of the CCJE on 8 November 2011.
