Data protection

The European Conference of Data Protection Authorities is bringing together representatives of over 40 national and sub-national European data protection authorities in Strasbourg on 5 June to discuss how to strengthen European and international cooperation in this field.

The Council of Europe and the French data protection authority (Commission Nationale de l´Informatique et des Libertés - CNIL) are co-organising the conference, which is held under the theme “European and international cooperation in the field of data protection”.

Philippe Boillat, Council of Europe Director General of Human Rights and the Rule of Law, and Isabelle Falque-Pierrotin, President of the CNIL, are speaking at the opening.

On the same day of the conference, the Council of Europe and the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) are launching the second revised edition of a handbook on European data protection law in English, and the translated versions in FrenchGermanGreek and Italian.

The first edition of the manual was launched only in English on 28 January, Data Protection Day, and already got over 17,500 downloads.

The handbook is the first comprehensive guide to Council of Europe and European Union law on data protection, taking into account the case law from the European Court of Human Rights and the Court of Justice of the European Union. It explains how data protection is regulated under EU law as well as the Council of Europe Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data, and other Council of Europe instruments.

The second edition of the handbook further covers the latest developments in the area of data protection, such as decisions related to the Data Retention Directive and the independence of data protection supervisory authorities.
