Back Deputy Secretary General meets Italian Minister for Social Policies Fornero

Deputy Secretary General

"The Council of Europe has developed a series of instruments and mechanisms in order to promote social fairness", said Gabriella Battaini Dragoni in the meeting with the Italian Minister for Labour, Social policies and Equal Opportunities, Elsa Fornero.

The Deputy Secretary General has highlighted the relevance of the Institution's social activities in the turmoil provided by the financial crisis, emphasizing the role of the Social Charter. Minister Fornero has underlined the importance for Italy of the Council of Europe convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (CETS No. 210), signed on 27 September, 2012.

The Convention has been opened for signature on the occasion of the 121st session of the Committee of Ministers in Istanbul (May 2011), and is also open to accession by non-European countries and by the European Union.

This landmark treaty is the first legally binding instrument in Europe creating a comprehensive legal framework to protect women against all forms of violence, and prevent, prosecute and eliminate violence against women and domestic violence. The Convention also establishes an international mechanism to monitor its implementation at national level.

Minister Fornero had also an exchange of views with Dean Spielmann, President of the European Court of Human Rights.
