People displaced due to conflict in eastern Ukraine need psycho-social support

Displaced people who have experienced distress and often suffered severe traumatic experiences due to the conflict in eastern Ukraine urgently need effective psycho-social support services to improve community resilience, social cohesion and prevent mental illness and substance use disorders. From 4 to 8 April, Pompidou Group experts from Germany, Israel and Ukraine travel from Kiev to Zaporozhe, Kramatorsk, Sloviansk (Donetsk) and Severodonetsk (Lugansk) where they meet Ukrainian volunteers, front line workers as well as national and local authorities in order to support the development of strategies that aim to improve the lives of thousands of internally displaced persons. For many of them the distress persists because they still live in temporary shelters or struggle to integrate in their new environment. The goal of the assessment mission is to prepare outreach strategies and support protocols to be followed by capacity building in Ukraine throughout 2016 in the framework of the Council of Europe Project “Strengthening the Human Rights Protection of Internally Displaced Persons in Ukraine”.
