Roma and Travellers Division strengthens police response to prejudice-motivated crimes in the Slovak Republic

A training session with police officers was organised in Liptovsky Jan from 25 to 27 May 2026, by the Roma and Travellers Division, in close co-operation with the Police Force Presidium of the Ministry of Interior of the Slovak Republic, the Office of the Agent of the Slovak Republic before the European Court of Human Rights, and the Department for the Execution of Judgments of the European Court ofHuman Rights.

This activity builds on earlier Council of Europe capacity‑building work in the Slovak Republic and forms part of ongoing cooperation with national authorities, while also contributing to the implementation of the Strategy for Roma and Traveller Inclusion (2026 - 2030) by supporting national efforts aligned with its priorities of equality, inclusion, and participation.

The training, based on the Council of Europe Toolkit for Police Officers, combined practical exercises, scenario‑based case studies and analysis of European standards and ECtHR jurisprudence to enhance the identification, investigation and documentation of racially motivated incidents in a rights‑based and victim‑centred manner.

The training brought together 20 specialist police officers and investigators from across the Slovak Republic. The programme addressed the specific impact of antigypsyism and stereotyping on policing, non‑discrimination standards and determinants of vulnerability, and promoted stronger cooperation between law enforcement, civil society organisations and Roma and Traveller communities to build trust and understanding.
