Back The Intercultural Calendar

Purpose: A calendar for different religious, cultural and international celebrations

Stimulus/Rationale:

Process:

Together with the integration representatives of each Berlin district, Neukölln co-manages Berlin’s Intercultural Calendar that integrates the various holidays and feasts celebrated in the city. First of all, in this calendar, the new year is celebrated several times, including not only the 31st December, but also the Vienamese/Chinese New Year and the Yazidi New Year (Charshama Sor), for example.

Various religious/cultural celebrations are included, from Christmas and Thanksgiving, Saint Patrick’s Day or Bastille Day to the Jewish holiday Sukkot, the Tamil Pongol festival or Ramadan.

Other important dates unrelated to a specific religion or ethnicity also have a place here, whether it be World Refugee Day, International Women’s Day or the international LGBT celebration on Christopher Street Day. The famous Berlin festival “Karneval der Kulturen” (“Carneval of Cultures”) is noted as an important day.

This calendar thereby brings together various religions, cultures, nationalities and identities – to be acknowledged, respected and celebrated by all.
