The project Educating for Diversity and Democracy: teaching history in contemporary Europe will:
 

  • Take place within the over-arching theme of “participation and diversity”. Phase I will run for a two year period, 2016-2017. Phase II was designed for the period of 2018-2019.
     
  • Provide a wide forum for discussion engaging those involved in history education at a variety of levels - decision makers, teacher training institutions, NGOs and practising teachers. Particular emphasis will be given to including the young generation of history educators and to building bridges between generations.
     
  • Provide input to other relevant projects in the CoE educational sector such as the projects on Competences for Democratic Culture and Intercultural Dialogue (CDCID) and the project on Digital Citizenship Education.
     

Phase I (2016-2017)

Taking into account the diverse range of existing educational systems in Europe the first step will be, in close co-operation with the ministries of education of the member states, to hold four regional level pilot activities with a view to:

  • identifying the existing challenges in history education and analysing how to overcome them at the level of education policies and pedagogical practice;
  • analysing specific and common parameters in history education at the regional level;
  • collecting examples of effective practice in the areas of the curriculum, pedagogy, resources, assessment and teacher training;
  • putting forward proposals on what makes for high quality in history education at the regional level.

Phase I will cover specific objectives 1-3 and will result in the preparation of an analytical report summing up the regional data and will serve as a basis for the Phase II.
 

Phase II (2018-2019)

Phase II will focus on:

  • analysis of the regional data and materials to identify common themes, shared concerns and specific instances of good practice that might have wider application in informing history education at the European level;
  • producing Guidelines particularly aimed at policy makers, curriculum developers and teacher trainers to support them in identifying and achieving high quality in history education within contemporary diverse democratic societies;
  • piloting and disseminating the outputs of the project in a selected number of regional and national contexts.
