Training for lawyers on Freedom of expression and Defamation

Under the Joint Project “Reinforcing Judicial Expertise on Freedom of Expression and the Media in South-East Europe (JUFREX)” co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe, on 9 and 10 October 2018, the Council of Europe co-organised, in co-operation with the Macedonian Bar Association, a training for lawyers on Freedom of expression and Defamation.

Two experts delivered the training. Ms. Mirjana Lazarova Trajkovska, a former judge at the European court of human rights, was engaged as an international expert to cover relevant European standards and case law of the European Court of Human Rights. Mr. Nikola Dodevski, a practising lawyer experienced in the topic, analysed the domestic legal framework as well as procedural matters, including related court proceedings, in his capacity of a national expert.

Some 20 participants at the training made use of the exchange of expertise and views on enhancing lawyers’ understanding of European standards and ECtHR’s case law in the area of freedom of expression and defamation. Newly acquired knowledge should enhance participants’ daily work on relevant freedom of expression and defamation cases.

The views expressed therein can in no way be taken to reflect the official opinion of the European Union.
