On 26 November, representatives of the Audiovisual Council of the Republic of Moldova participated in the Annual Media Literacy Conference, held in Dublin (Ireland), one of the most prestigious European events dedicated to media and information literacy. Organised under the theme “Media Education and Information Literacy – Empowering Communities, Strengthening Citizenship, Promoting Democracy”, the conference brought together experts, regulators, civil society actors and educators from across Europe to discuss current challenges and forward-looking strategies in the field of media literacy.
In her intervention, the Chair of the Audiovisual Council of Moldova, Liliana Vitu addressed the complex balance between regulation and censorship, highlighting how effective audiovisual and online regulation builds or erodes public trust in the information ecosystem. Mrs. Vitu emphasized the importance of strengthening society’s understanding of media oversight mechanisms and the essential role of independent, ethical journalism in ensuring democratic resilience.
The representatives of the Audiovisual Council also undertook a study visit to Ireland’s audiovisual regulatory authority, Coimisiún na Meán. The Moldovan representatives held meetings with the Head of the Broadcasting and Video-on-Demand Department and with officials responsible for monitoring compliance with the EU Digital Services Act (DSA) and the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA). These exchanges offered valuable insights into European best practices in regulating digital platforms, safeguarding media freedom and ensuring transparency in the online space, a process to which the Republic of Moldova remains committed to in its EU integration process.
The participation of the Moldovan Audiovisual Council representatives at the conference and study visit was supported by the Council of Europe Project “Advancing Media Freedom in the Republic of Moldova (2025 - 2028).”
