Назад Project “Plein air for children”

Purpose: The project aims to unite the community and provide psychological rehabilitation and adaptation of children from IDPs and national minorities in particular to community life in war conditions by involving them in the creative process.

Rationale: As a result of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the problem of the psychological state of children and adults in Ukraine has become of great importance. Many of them are experiencing acute reactions and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.

The issue of the emotional state of children, in particular internally displaced persons (IDPs), including national minorities, their integration into community life and supporting mental health is an important and priority task for adults.

The project’s main goals are:

  • promoting the development of creative abilities of children in the Lutsk community;
  • integration of IDP children, including national minorities, into the community;
  • improving their psycho-emotional state caused by martial law;
  • promotion of European cultural heritage.

Process: As part of the project, on September 24, an open air painting festival, or “plein air”, for children “Lutsk Intercultural” was held in the Museum Space “Okolny Zamok”. The art event brought together 33 creatively gifted children of the community, including IDPs, representatives of national minorities and students of the Lutsk Art School. In preparation for the plein air, the schoolchildren went on an excursion “Lutsk European” (September 8), during which they visited historical sites and learned more about Lutsk, an ancient European city with a unique cultural heritage and cultural diversity. The children recreated their architectural sketches on canvas using acrylic painting. The exhibition of plein air works was exhibited from October 11 to 31 this year in the Lutsk Art Gallery. A final video was created based on the results of the project.

The project was implemented within the Council of Europe's Intercultural Cities Programme with financial support from the intercultural city of Stavanger (Norway). The project partners are: Department for Culture of Lutsk City Council, Lutsk Art School and NGO "New Level".

Impact:

  • reducing the negative emotional consequences of war among IDP children, including national minorities and community residents;
  • improving their mental health through art;
  • increasing children's interest in art.
